Space-Saving 19" design: The FA Series

Electronic equipment is getting smaller by the day but until recently batteries used as backup power supply could not keep up with this. Traditional VRLA batteries have their terminals located at the top, requiring additional space above the battery. With space being at a premium in 19” cabinets, many developers of electronic equipment are looking for space-saving designs in batteries.

The design brief was interesting: develop a 48 Volt battery system that is narrow enough to fit into a 19” cabinet, that is still light enough to be handled by a single person, that has terminals that are easily accaseble and does not cost a fortune!

The pbq engineering staff used these inputs to come up with not one but seven different models! Each of them has been developed against the highest industrial standards including V0 (flame retardant) casings, terminals with copper inserts for the lowest resistance, covered front access terminals and a build-in quality that will last 10 years or more in standby applications and even 13 years for the 155Ah version.

pbq Cyclic and High Rate Batteries

The pbq cyclic and high rate discharge batteries differ from standard VRLA models in several ways: the lead plates are made to a different formula and the shape of the grids is also different, when compared with those found in standard VRLA batteries. By introducing other metal additives, the lead plates are physically stronger whilst the different grid shape ensures excellent conductivity.

Working life of cyclic batteries is normally calculated as the number of charge/discharge cycles versus the depth of discharge (DoD). The pbq Cyclic VRLA batteries offer an exceptionally good working life with well over 1100 cycles at 30% DoD. However, the deeper the discharge, the fewer is the total number of cycles that the battery can give. It is therefore best to select the battery such that a depth of discharge of between 30% and 50% will be reached during normal use.

pbq cyclic VRLA batteries come in many standard physical sizes, ranging from 7Ah up to 80Ah thus ensuring that the majority of all cyclic applications can be met by using pbq cyclic batteries.

Sealed lead acid batteries are used as power sources of portable equipment or for backup battery of office and factory automation systems. These batteries also combine with solar cells to make a decentralized power supply system. Sealed lead-acid batteries are small and lightweight and give high performance while still being economical to use. In addition to these advantages, the sealed construction eliminates the necessity to fill it with water.

Specifics of Lead Acid Batteries
The complete ranges of Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries offered by Power Storage Europe BV are probably the best VRLA series in the world. They are distributed throughout Europe by Power Storage Europe and its Official Distribution Partners and are available in 2, 4, 6 and 12 Volt versions ranging from 0,7Ah up to 5.000Ah.

VRLA rechargeable batteries are designed to provide outstanding performance in withstanding overcharge, over-discharge, vibration and shock.

VRLA batteries are often used in two different modes: standby or cyclic. Standby applications are mainly restricted to UPS systems where one or more VRLA batteries are used as the power source in case the main supply fails. Using advanced electronics the DC voltage is being converted to a sinus wave of 50 or 60 Hz and a voltage of 220 or 110V. Depending on the time needed to bring the (computer) application down in a controlled manner, more VRLA batteries can be fitted.

Under normal use the battery will be fully charged at all time, ready to be utilized when the main power fails. A dedicated charger is used to prevent overcharging. More sophisticated systems use multiple VRLA batteries that are being alternately charged and partly discharged to increase the functionality of the VRLA batteries.

Cyclic use
Cyclic use of the battery is frequently shown when they are used in machinery such as floor-scrubbers and -polishers, transportation equipment etc. The battery is usually charged overnight and discharged during the day. Care should be taken not to over-discharge the battery in order to prevent damage that might occur to the plates in the VRLA battery.

At the end of the 20th century the environmental problems with Cadmium as found in NiCad cell was the trigger to introduce the NiMH cells on a wide scale. Although this technology was known for several decades, producing these cells against commercially viable prices was not realistic before.

Today a number of excellent producers offers a wide range of NiMH cells for use in both professional and household appliances. As an excellent alternative for non-rechargeable and NiCad cells these NiMH cells have found their way in nearly all applications. Lithium Cells and Batteries

Nearly all professional applications for one-way portable power supplies are equipped with primary Lithium cells. Lithium cells offer unsurpassed power-per-volume and power-per-weight ratios. Therefore they are the prime selections for medical equipment, the mining- and oil industry, safety lights, torches etc. etc.
